IT ENDED up being forty-three minutes, but who was counting? I had restlessly paced the apartment, picking up a few discarded articles of clothing and straightening piles of books and junk. I stopped when I caught my reflection in the bathroom mirror while tossing chef whites into the hamper.

I looked old. Tired. The thick, black grandpa sweater I had donned did not make me feel any more attractive either. Frustrated, I pulled it off and walked into the bedroom, where I tossed it unceremoniously into the closet.

I pushed hangers about, trying to find something better to change into that didn’t reflect the crotchety, seventy-year-old man inside me. Was a T-shirt enough? Too casual? Hell, he was coming over for a glass of wine at nearly eleven at night.

He was not coming over for wine, I realized.

Had I suggested—?

I ran over to my nightstand, digging through the junk. Old watches, extra pair of glasses, paperback book, oh thank god I had a condom. I raised the package up, eyeing it critically.

“When did I buy you?” I asked it. “Oh fuck, do I even own lube?”

If I had to ask the question, it had been too long.

My cell rang in my pocket and I jumped, dropping the condom. Scrambling for the package and the phone, I answered a bit flustered, “Are you here?”

“Yeah, are you okay?”

“Fine!” I shoved the condom into the drawer and shut it. “Did the doorman let you in?”

“Yes, second floor he said?”

“Apartment C,” I confirmed.

“Be right there.”

Keith was knocking by the time I entered the front room again.

I took a deep breath and opened the door. “Hi.”

He smiled, brushing snow from his hair. “Evening.”

“It’s snowing?”

“Just started.”

I quickly stepped aside. “Come in.”

“Thanks.” He unbuttoned his coat while looking around. “This is a nice place.”

“Let me take your coat.” I went to hang it beside mine.

“There’s my champ!” Keith said, crouching down as Oscar ran into the room and jumped up to meet his outstretched hand.

I watched the two in amusement for a minute, gaze eventually wandering over Keith’s figure. Strong, big frame, wearing a black T-shirt with the logo of his animal clinic on the back, “Helping Paws,” and dark blue skinny jeans that left nothing to the imagination.

What an ass.

Literally.

“So, wine,” I quickly stated while walking into the kitchen, my cheeks burning. I grabbed two glasses from a cupboard and a corkscrew.

Keith walked across the room, setting his hands on the bar top and leaning over it with a smile, watching me. “So you do all of the magic in here?” he asked.

“Magic—? Oh, cooking. Some, most of it I do at my clients’ homes, because of food and safety regulations.”

He nodded.

“It’s not that interesting,” I quickly said as the cork popped from the bottle.

“What did you make today?”

“A stew, some shortcake… pan-seared sea bass.”

“Sounds amazing,” Keith replied.

“I made a beet joke, and he didn’t get it,” I stated while passing Keith a glass.

“Who?”

“What, oh, I mean the client.” I scratched the tip of my nose nervously. “Those vegetable puns of yours.
